3 considerations for a paver vs. flagstone patio

Putting a patio in your yard is a great decision: it increases your property value, it adds usable, functional space, and creates more area to entertain guests and friends who come to visit. But adding that patio comes with other decisions, such as what the patio should be made from.

في O'Neill Landscape Group, we design and install custom patios using flagstone and concrete pavers. Learn about three things you should consider and which material you may want to use for your property in Roswell, Alpharetta, Woodstock, and nearby cities in Georgia.

1. Cost: If budget is a concern, then concrete pavers are the most likely choice.

If you are just looking at cost because budget is a concern for you, then you may very likely want to look at choosing concrete pavers for your new patio. They are cheaper per square foot and also come pre-cut, whereas flagstone pieces come to us directly from a quarry and have to be shaped by our expert stoneworkers. Flagstone will require more labor time and cost to install.

Generally, concrete pavers will cost anywhere from $3-$6 per square foot, while flagstone will run anywhere from $15-$20 per square foot.

2. Design: Both pavers and stone present a variety of options.

When it comes to design, both flagstone and concrete pavers present a wide variety of options. Pavers have the most options, as they can come in any color, shape, size, or pattern that you want. That being said, flagstone is a term that encompasses many types of natural stone such as:

  • حجر الكلس
  • لائحة
  • بلوستون

These stones all have beautiful colors and give off a very natural look and feel, making it seem like the patio was always a part of your property. No matter which material you end up deciding on, our hardscape contractors will work with you to pick a color and type that best complements the exterior of your property.

3. Lifespan & Maintenance: Flagstone lasts forever and does not require much maintenance.

Based on lifespan and maintenance alone, flagstone is the clear winner. Natural stone will last forever and will not require a lot of maintenance and upkeep. The only part of a stone patio that may need maintaining is the mortar betwen the stones, as that can start to break down after about a decade or so.

Concrete pavers, however, will generally last about 50 years so long as they are routinely cleaned and resealed to protect them from stains or the weather. Pavers will also sometimes crack or break due to the ground shifting, but it is relatively easy to replace a broken paver if they do happen to crack.
