The longevity of stone puts any human concept of old age to shame. Stone creates a sense of permanence and solidity, even when worn and weathered. It’s been used throughout history as the structure and facade of buildings- buildings that have literally stood the test of time. While natural stone has been the material of choice for millennia, glass has dominated commercial construction—especially large scale projects like skyscrapers—in recent years. But architects are increasingly reacting to this glut of glass by returning to stone for their projects. For many developers and architects, glass had become the default, a sterile, too obvious choice which resulted in a flat, texture-less and uninspired design.Kara karantawa

Stone cladding is also known as stacked stone or stone veneer. It can be made from actual stone or artificial, so-called engineered stone. It’s available in a wide variety of finishes that look like slate, brick, and many other stones. It’s a fast and affordable way to get the look of stone on a wall without the cost or time of a masonry installation.Kara karantawa

The way the exterior of your home looks is arguably more important than the way it appears inside. Your home’s exterior style and appearance have a lot to do with its value, its curb appeal, and how quickly it’s able to sell when put it on the market.Kara karantawa

Last spring, my wife and I got rid of our trampoline. It's a bit sad, but the kids are in college now. All that was left of our backyard was this huge circular void. So, I said, "I get it - let's build a patio and fire pit before the Martians think this is a new landing site." My wife loved the idea, and the rest is history, and a slight back pain. This tutorial will show you how I created a 20 foot diameter flagstone patio. It took some hernia-inducing work, but now I stare at my backyard through shattered granite eyes and say, "Oh, yeah. I built that."How to Make a Flagstone Patio. here we go!Kara karantawa

This DIY article; and the rest of the how-to section of my blog, cover most of the basics of how to properly build a flagstone patio. These articles provide general guidance, or at least advice, useful for hobbyists, DIY landscape designers/builders, and professional builders alike. So, what type of foundation should we build for our flagstone patio: sand, cement, or gravel? Short answer: It depends. Quarry screening (if one is available in your area) is usually best done under flagstone. Screening is also one of the best options among gemstones, but there are other options available to achieve different aesthetics. First, we'll address the structural question of "what to use under the slab." Cement - at some point it (may) break. It may last a long time, but when it does break down, fixing it will be a lot more work than repairing dry slate. Sand – ants will dig it up and leave it everywhere…sand can also be washed away, causing rocks to settle. Gravel – There’s really no problem here, just use the right type of gravel. Even better, use modified gravel as a base and then stone powder (aka quarry screening, aka grit, aka quarry dust) as the final leveling agent. Okay, so let's be more specific.Kara karantawa
